Predicted Top Reasons Learners Would Fail Driving Tests in 2025

Learners must meet the minimum driving standards set by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency – DVSA in the UK to pass their practical driving test. Based on the most common driving faults learners failed tests in 2024, we will talk about the predicted top reasons learners would fail their driving test in the UK in 2025.

If the learners are making these driving mistakes highlighted in this article during their driving lessons with an approved driving instructor or when practicing privately, that means they’re not up to the test standard yet.

Learner drivers need to ask the person supervising or their driving instructor to identify and practice any of these areas (s) where they still need to improve their understanding, knowledge, and skills.

Learners need to learn these skills to be safe motorists and pass their car test.

Poor Observations

Not good and proper observations at junctions. They must ensure that it’s safe and clear before turning into a new road.

For example, learners don’t properly judge how far the approaching vehicle is and force them to slow down which results in a test fail.

According to collisions and casualties (table RAS0701), in 2022, 1 in 3 accidents were reported in GB because of ineffective observation.

Mirrors Check

Learners don’t check mirrors properly before changing lanes or directions. Learners must look and make proper use of mirrors so they know what’s around and behind their vehicle.

Blind Spot

They don’t move off safely especially miss their blind spot and fail their test. Learners must make 360-degree angle checks for a safe move-off.

Wrong Positioning

Several learners fail their test because of incorrect position when turning right from the main road to the side road. They go over the centre line on the wrong side of the road and obstruct the oncoming traffic. Learners must stay just left of the centre line until they need to turn.

Traffic Lights

Many learners don’t respond to the traffic lights appropriately and fail their driving test. Lack of awareness and try to go through when the light is red.

Steering Wheel

Some learners fail tests because of not having full control of the steering wheel. They don’t steer in good time and result in swinging out or hitting the kerb.

Road Markings

Learners have less awareness of the correct road markings. They don’t appropriately respond to road markings. Learners must look for road signs and road markings well before the junction and position in the correct lane timely. For example, learners try to go to the right side of the “Keep left” sign.

Bus Lane

Candidates drive in the bus lane when the sign says they can’t use the bus lane at that time of the day.

Position at the Roundabouts

Candidates don’t look at the available information on approach to the roundabouts and choose the wrong lane to take the exit.

Normal Driving Position

Learners repeated drive either too close to the kerb which could cause danger for pedestrians or to the middle of the road could cause risk for the oncoing road users. They should maintain a normal driving position throughout their test.

Appropriate Speed

Learners don’t pay attention to the speed limit signs and without realising either drive too slow or too fast for the road type and traffic situation.
